Parking your vehicle is a key essential thing to know and master in order to become a complete driver. There are quite a few Parking types to learn about but they are not options to choose from, because depending upon the area and parking slot designs different parking techniques will be required in different places so it is must to know and master all applicable parking types and techniques.

 

In any kind of parking type, there are basic guidelines to adhere to.

 

Stick to signs, if you see a marking then park inside the bay, while parking, don't obstruct pathway, ensure your vehicle is parked allowing space for larger vehicles to pass through.

 

Parallel Parking:

              Parallel parking is a method in which your vehicle is parked in line with other parked vehicles on one side of the road and facing along the same direction as traffic on that side.

How to?

              1. Choose right - Find an open slot which is 1.5 times longer than your car.

              2. Position - Stop your car parallel to the car behind which you are planning to park. Do this with 2-3 feet distance from the car.

              3. Reverse - Reverse till half of your car is inline with the rear of the other vehicle's bumper

              4. Slot-in - Turn steering wheel towards the right to angle the vehicle into the slot at 45 degrees and continue to reverse. Turn Steering Anti-Clockwise and continue reversing till you align with the other vehicles and parallel to the wall/divider.

              5. Straighten - Straighten if vehicle is not fully in parallel and adjust to ensure equal distance from vehicles in front and back.

 

If the parallel park is to your left apply the same steps aligning to left.

Angle Parking:

              Angle parking is a method in which vehicles are parked at an acute angle to the direction of approach. This angle of inclination allows drivers to enter and exit the space easily.

How to ?

              1. Choose right - Find an open slot which angles into you in the direction of approach.

              2. Position - Drive till you’re a few feet from the open slot.

              3. Slot-in & Straighten - Visually mark the middle of the slot, move forward slowly steer toward the center of the slot and then straighten the wheels. Stop when the bumper is about 6 inches from end of the slot.

Center of the road parking:

              Center of the road parkings are also referred to as Bay Parking. When doing center of road parking, you must drive in forward & drive out forward. Reverse in or reverse out of center of road parking spaces are not allowed, unless otherwise specific signs are put up.

 

Few tips for parking,

 

              1. Be Alert, Do not Park in No Parking Zones.

              2. Park in well-illuminated spots.

              3. Avoid parking in front of shop exits as trolleys can damage your car.

              4. Be patient and wait for a vacant spot instead of going around looking for a spot.

              5. Ask fellow drivers regarding a vacant spot.

              6. Seeing people who are swinging keys, hold they might be taking their vehicles out.

              7. You are not allowed to park for longer than the time mentioned on the parking sign or parking ticket.

              8. Parking time limits on the sign only apply during the times shown. Outside that window, you are allowed to park without restrictions, unless there are signs explicitly mentioning you can't.

Basic things to ensure before you exit the parking area.

 

1. Turn off your vehicle engine and remove the keys from the key slot.

2. Apply Parking brakes. if you are in a sloppy terrain then put your vehicle in Any Gear or in Drive Mode

3. Ensure All doors and windows are closed. If there are people inside do not keep the windows closed.

4. Do not leave kids or pets locked inside the vehicle.

 

Please note in general all parking rules apply even if your vehicle has broken down or if your hazard warning lights are turned on.

4. Loading Zone

5. Truck Zone

 In each of the above zones there are specific conditions on allowance and restrictions, let’s look at them

1. No Parking Zone - You are allowed to stop for 2 minutes in this zone. This allowance is considering you are picking up or dropping off passengers or goods. In all cases the driver will have to be within 3 meters of vehicle.

2. No Stop Zone - You are not allowed to stop your car in this zone even picking up or dropping off passengers or goods is not allowed in this zone.

3. Clearways - You are not allowed to stop in this zone. Public buses and taxis are allowed to pick up or drop off passengers in this place.

4. Loading Zone - Goods Vehicles, Couriers or signed vehicles, trucks are allowed to stop here to pick up or drop off goods. Private & Public Buses/Vans with 10-12 seating capacity are allowed to park in this zone. Taxis and Hire cars are allowed to stop here other vehicles are not allowed here for pickup or drop-offs.

5. Truck Zone - Vehicles with gross mass more than 4.5Tons are allowed to park or stop here, others are not allowed.

6. Bus Zone - Only Public Buses are allowed to park or stop here, others are not allowed.

7. Taxi Zone - Only Taxis are allowed to park or stop here, others are not allowed.

8. Permit Zone - Only vehicles with valid permits issued by concerned authority is allowed to park or stop here.

9. Works Zone - Only Vehicles related to construction work in or near work zone can park or stop here.

10. Mail Zone - Only Postal vehicles can park or stop here.
